When Susan Spitz, of Maplewood, was getting her ice cream business, One World Ice Cream (then called World’s Fare), off the ground last February, she says people told her if she could make ice cream as good as Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, “You’ll be golden.”
Jeni’s is out of Columbus, OH, and is sold locally. Spitz has been selling One World Ice Cream at farmers markets.
Last month Spitz planned a blind tasting event between One World Ice Cream and Jeni’s at Local Harvest Café on Wednesday. Not long after that, Jeni’s announced a store opening in the Central West End next year.
Spitz said the timing surprised her. She didn’t collaborate with Jeni’s on the event. “As long as they don’t have a problem with it I think it will work out fine,” she said.
Tickets are available to the taste-off, which Spitz called a fair fight. She said it will be more of a comparison than win-lose, but she might be a little nervous.
“I don’t know if people are going to like mine better than hers, and what if they like everything of hers better than mine?” Spitz said. She has recruited celebrity judges to give their opinions too.
One World and Jeni’s has some comparable flavors, which will be included.
Featured in the event: vanilla (Spitz’s vanilla has cardamom in it), chocolate, sweet corn (Jeni’s sweet corn has black berries, Spitz’s has tart cherries) and pistachio (Spitz’s pistachio contains olive oil and honey).
Spitz will also have pumpkin, cinnamon and possibly other holiday-related ice cream for sale at the event.
We should all go out and support Susan. Here Ice Cream is amazing. We had here here at The Book House last year for a tasting and hope to host her again for the Sweet Tooth Tour.
Thanks Michelle – so fun to work with you – everyone should also support your Kickstarter campaign – and no, she didn’t put me up to this! I’m supporting her and they are at a critical stage. It’s great to have a local bookstore in Maplewood. What’s the link to the campaign?
Here’s the link to the Book House Kickstarter if interested. Good luck on Wednesday Susan. We are going to try to make it.

Great! That’ll be fun.
“her” not “here” sorry for the typos !
Sounds like a winner to me.
We are so excited about this event. At Local Harvest Grocery yesterday, people were raving about our flavors, including a chef from Pasteria, who says he’s been following me since the Maplewood Coffee Crawl last April Our celebrity judge – Patrick Devine from Choquette – used to make all the ice creams at the Ritz!
