A dog park is in the works for Brentwood, Mayor Pat Kelly said at the residents coffee Friday.
Kelly said he and city staff have been developing ideas for the park on Mary Avenue at the site of the former Executive Walk Apartments, which was demolished in December 2013 and January of this year.
He said the park will have a small dog play area, a large dog area, paths for walking, water fountains for the dogs, and trees and benches.
He said more negotiation is still needed with one of the property owners.
“I’m hoping to bring the final design to the board at our next meeting (September 15), if I can get this agreement with the one property owner completed by that meeting,” Kelly said.
He said the biggest thing to work on is moving the driveway that was the entrance to the apartments.
Lots of Brentwood residents have asked me about a dog park in Brentwood. I am supportive of this idea and was pleased to see that it was included as a part of the Parks Department long range plan presented at last week’s Board of Alderman meeting.
If your needs are more immediate, I want to make you aware of the City of Maplewood Dog Park located just one block from the Brentwood – Maplewood boarder along Hanley Road (see map below):
I visited the park on Saturday. There were half a dozen canines who had their owners out enjoying the Spring sunshine. There are separate areas for big and small dogs.
Brentwood residents are permitted to join the park at resident rates, $20 per year for the first dog and $5 per year for each additional dog. You can apply for membership online at the City of Maplewood website or in person at Maplewood City Hall. You must present a digital picture of your dog(s) and current rabies vaccination. For more information call (314) 645-3600.
I’m thrilled at the prospect of having a dog park in Brentwood, however my concern is that the area being discussed is located across Manchester road, seperate from any residential area. Anyone wanting to actually walk their dog to the park would have to cross a very busy Manchester road. During one of the Parks Master Plan Mtgs, the area in Hanley Park was mentioned as a possible dog park. Its located right off the walking path, next to the tennis courts and sand volleyball courts in the Hanley industrial area. Seems like a safer place to consider.
