Maplewood Richmond Heights wrestling finished the state meet in Columbia, MO, Saturday with a state champion in the 120-pound class and a second-place finisher at 106.
MRH junior Romelle Person at 120, made it to the championship match for the second year in a row. Last year he finished second, this year he won the state title 8-4 in overtime against Maysville’s Kaleb Popplewell, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Person forced overtime with a takedown just as regulation time ended.
“I couldn’t let him win on points,” Person told the Post-Dispatch. “If somebody’s going to beat me, they have to stick me. They’re not going to beat me by points because if I lose by points that means I’m not trying hard enough to get the two points that I need. I’m going to do what I need to do.”
MRH junior Ronald Stewart, at 106, was pinned by Whitfield’s Mike McAteer in the first period in the rematch of a district final from last week. McAteer, a freshman, helped lead Whitfield to the team state title. MRH finished 14th as a team.
