PARK(ing) Day has come to Maplewood. It’s an annual international event where parking spaces — worldwide — are transformed into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. It takes place every third Friday in September.
Employees from Webster Groves landscape architecture firm, SWT Design and engineering firm, Farnsworth Group occupied a parking spot in the 7300 block of Manchester Road with a swatch of artificial grass, a park bench and a sign.
The sign is for people to write down alternatives to parking and driving a car.
“Our theory is less parking, less driving, more fill in the blank,” Chris Moon, of SWT said. “So people who have walked by have put in ‘smiling,’ ‘green,’ ‘freedom,’ ‘cooler climate.’ Use the car less and use the bike and walking for other things.”
One of the best things about Maplewood is how accessable it is. We have sidewalks, unlike in the burbs, and great shops to walk to. I love being able to walk to resturants and shops.
Our little town, with all of our locally owned businesses and services, parks and great schools, good neighbors and friends, is such an accessible jewel!
What a wonderful idea! I love living in Maplewood because I can walk everywhere!
Now there’s something you don’t see every day.
That’s why a lot of people live in Maplewood……we can walk where we want, a good deal of the time…..
