Richmond Heights resident elated over mosquito spraying: it’s twice a week

Richmond Heights resident Mike Jones is happy that the city now sprays for mosquitoes twice a week with its own equipment, rather than depending on the county to do it, which he said in an email was “hit and miss.”

Jones sent a letter to the editor about it:

This is what a city should be! A BIG thanks to our Mayor and City Council seeing a need to make and keep our city number one in the area. For our residents and their pets, Richmond Heights has again showed that safety and health come first. Our city staff as always will do a great job helping to keep the Mosquito problem down. Now we need the other cities to step up and follow Richmond Heights in this battle for our backyards and quality of life in our great city! Again, thanks for being proactive and doing the right thing.

  1. Unless they are using a mosquito specific treatment like BTI, this is terrible for the local ecosystem, most likely killing much more than mosquitos. Does anyone know what chemical they use? BTI needs to be promoted more as mosquito control, you can set up BTI water traps in your backyard to prevent mosquito larvae from developing. This chemical only affects the species in the mosquito genus. This and cleaning gutters/removing water sources is a much more effective solution than spraying chemicals.

  2. Besides mosquitoes, the spray kills lots of insects. This include bees. I agree that the biggest thing we can do to stop mosquitoes is to stop their breeding grounds, which are often gutters, birdbaths and other places water could be able to stand.

  3. Talked to a head keeper at the Insectarium yesterday. He was very sad to hear about the double spraying in Richmond Heights! Empty the standing water people. Mosquitos live their entire life 300 ft from their hatching place.

  4. In the 50, 60 and 70 I along with other kids use to ride our bikes behind the fog trucks. I still have all my friends, no one has died and for that matter not even sick. I think I am going to put the doom & gloom post next to the books on global warming. This fall I will invite you over to my backyard free of bugs and warm up with a (book)backyard fire and marshmallows roast !

    • We’re supposed to put anecdotal evidence on par with peer-reviewed scientific research? This is a SCIENCE issue, not an opinion piece.

      • Junk SCIENCE ? As soon as the Global Warming Hoax is over, we can get AL to start on bug spray. Did you ever think maybe the Russians are killing us with BUG spray? All I want is to sit in my backyard and not be eaten up by Mosquitos! I could rub repellent all over me and die of skin cancer in 50 years. We need Bill Nie on this one. The weather guy who has no knowledge of the problem, just how to count his money from telling everyone we are going to
die. As for as your peer-reviewed scientific take a look at http://www.thegwpf.com/2018-weather-related-disaster-losses-at-record-low. Now sent your BIG Fat checks to Al Gore! Bug sprays use correctly kill bug. If you don’t like it, hide in your dark basement until the first snow!

  5. Gary, so sorry to hear about all the losses you have personally experienced due to pesticides. Very sad. It seems that the education of our society in regard to what mankind is and has been doing to destroy our environment has a very long way to go. Or, even when provided that education, humans seem to continue to believe whatever they want to believe for their short- term benefit.

  6. People need to make sure they don’t have any standing water and replace water in pet bowls and birds baths every 4-5 days That would be better than poisoning our environment with more chemicals. What is the risk of someone accidentally inhaling the spray as the truck goes by? What about the effect on pets? Chickens? My cousin’s husband died of liver cancer from exposure to pesticides and herbicides on the farm. A friend died of lung cancer caused by excessive use of household chemicals (antigerm sprays) and another fried died of lung cancer from exposure to pesticides and herbicides on the farm during his youth. These claims are according to the doctors treating them.

  7. They serve no other purpose but for to be a food source for birds and bats and they have plenty of other food sources.
