The former Shop ‘n Save location in Maplewood will be taken over as a Schnucks, the St. Louis Business Journal reported on Wednesday.

The Business Journal says this is according to people working in the St. Louis grocery and retail markets.

As before, when asked by 40 South, Schnucks officials declined to confirm the move to the Business Journal.

  1. all this speculation. Anyone called the city manager or someone at the chamber of commerce or some similar type organization and see if it is a for sure deal? It will have to come up before the city for things like permits and occupancy and inspections before anyone can move in there so there will have to be a public record of it sooner or later.

  2. I’m concerned they will buy it but not put a grocery store there and leave it an empty building. I believe they still own the building on Clayton and Hanley which has been left empty for years. It would be such an eyesore if they did that on Manchester too. Is there any discussion that it will be a functioning store and not empty?

    • While Schnucks has a history of letting their former buildings sit empty and blocking other stores, the Clayton and Hanley situation isn’t on them. Someone else owned that property and had no problem sitting on it for years, waiting for someone that was willing to overpay for a prime intersection. As understand it a fairly large upscale retirement condo building will finally be going in there.

      • Thanks for clarifying that! My main concern is this building is used. I’m still concerned but not as much fro your comment 🙂

        • I agree as Schnucks has a history of letting former stores sitting empty then blocking other groceries from coming in. Twin Oaks in West County at Big Bend and 141 is a prime example. They also did it in Affton and a few places in North County.

But like I said that Moorlands Schnucks is a unique situation as the owner of the land wanted a fortune and the only way for a developer to recoup it was building a high rise.

  3. I’m just happy to get another grocery store within walking distance.
I’ve been going to the Webster Schnucks on Big Bend & Elm since the SNS closed since it’s on my way home from other activities. I like the “smallness” of it. I guess the Maplewood Schnucks will be similar — because of its size. I miss just be able to run down there to get a few things before midnight.

    • Agreed. First, it’s fascinating how many comments treat Aldi as if it doesn’t exist and hasn’t been an affordable, accessible grocery option for years. SnS had substandard produce, bakery and deli offerings and overall prices at or very near Schnucks levels in my experience. Expired meat or dairy products on the shelves was par for the course.

Aldi is the store some here seem to think SnS was. I’m glad a higher quality store will replace SnS, but I will still do most weekly shopping at Aldi.

    • And then there are those who are content with mediocrity…. These are the same people who would have gladly kept us chained to that horrible SNS despite the terrible quality/price ratio.

      • I’m just glad that all these people who are complaining about Schnucks have absolutely no power to stop this. You just keep crying, the tears are great seasoning for my fried chicken.

      • Right you are. SNS was a horrible operation that attracted the wrong element and ultimately a shooting in the parking lot in broad daylight. MWP is on the upswing and we should strive for higher quality retail than chicken shacks, fast food, dollar stores and discount grocers…

        • The fact that it was a SnS had no bearing on whether a person was shot in that parking lot. The fact that Maplewood police don’t monitor people who come out of bars and other establishments that serve liquor, for drunkenness there has nothing to do with it. Vapor stores and tattoo parlors? Maplewood and its Government aren’t doing too bad. But remember this. If the city loses 100K or 500k, taxes on the tax payer will ultimately rise. The SnS wasn’t a bad place to shop and neither is Aldi’s. But money is money and I hope something happens soon for the City of Maplewood.

  4. Having a Schnucks will surely help fill the other spaces in the strip which is exciting. There’s a lot of spaces there to fill!

  5. Just shopped at Schnucks Brentwood and employees I asked didn’t know or didn’t believe Schnucks would open another store so close to the existing stores in Brentwood & Richmond Heights. The manager wasn’t around but probably would have said he doesn’t know. St. Louis Business Journal was only quoting people from the local grocery industry. Given it’s only 50,575 sq ft, the Maplewood location may be opened as a smaller format store perhaps resembling Schnucks Culinaria Market downtown – more “upscale” carrying its Culinaria brand items, but that may be too small for this footprint. It would somewhat differentiate the location from the other two existing stores in Brentwood & Richmond Hts. We’ll see what happens… still might be leased to another brand store.

    • I don’t see it as a Culinaria; the space is big enough for a full grocery store as proven by Shop N Save’s prior existence. Culinaria is much much smaller. I believe the area can easily support another Schnucks.

  6. This is the worst comment section ever. How is there anything to complain about here. We get a better grocery store in exchange for SNS.

  7. At my last job I would go to Schnuck’s in Brentwood for lunch 2-3 times per week, but did my grocery shopping at the Maplewood Shop n Save just a few streets away. When Shop n Save was selling avocados for $.80 Schnuck’s was selling them for $1.50. When Shop n Save was selling cucumbers for $1.50 Schnucks had them for $1.

Lucky’s was selling gigantic watermelons for $1 on sale while Shop n Save only has a sale on the bowling ball-sized watermelons for $1, but Lucky’s was either completely missing items I normally get at Shop n Save or would have a fancy version for double the price. I just bought Schnuck’s store brand almond milk for $3 while Shop n Save sold their store brand for $2.50.

Be prepared to either spend the same or more money on your overall bill depending on what you get. I have a feeling my grocery shopping will now consist of going to Schnuck’s and GFS.

  8. It’s gonna be Culinaria – A Schnuck’s Market.

“Culinaria” is the Italian word for “pretentious free-range quinoa.”

  9. Schnuck’s moving to the Maplewood location was nothing more than a business decision and trust me we are lucky. SNS is going away. As we all know the lease was up at the location in Maplewood and SNS did not renew. Schnuck’s is arranging to lease all of the SNS locations as they close or their lease is not renewed. Schnuck’s will certainly outbid any and all competitors. Why? To eliminate competition. It would be my guess that some SNS location will sit empty once they close and that is why I consider Maplewood fortunate that we have that space being re-branded.

    • While I’d rather have a fresh thyme or luckys which I think are similar in price or maybe even cheaper depending on what you are buying, I do think Schnucks is an improvement over SNS. I’m grateful for that. I’m hoping the Schnucks store that replaces it is more akin to the one in Clayton than to the Brentwood location in terms of quality.

  10. For those saying Schnucks is overpriced, I disagree. Have you priced their store brand compared to Trader Joes? First off Trader Joes is not local it is a German based company as is Aldis. Secondly Trader Joes has no selection it is their brand only. So comparisons between the two stores are not valid if you do not compare store brand to store brand.
Money made by Schnucks goes to help people in STL, just look around at the different places helped by Schnucks.

  11. Any idea when this would happen? Schnucks would be great. And they are locally owned.
I usually shop at the Schnucks at Brentwood and Manchester and I love them and the staff there are always friendly and many of them have been there a long time and know my family on a first name basis. They have great prices, I definately like Schnucks. I just hope that by moving into Maplewood they don’t compromise the store in Brentwood. Will they be able to sustain both stores?

    • There is also the store in Richmond heights, seems like a Schnucks will be in every little town in the county. I think that is a little excessive, but I would venture to say they probably can sustain them. I know an employee who works at the Brentwood Schnucks and they told me the new store would be ready in about a month. If this is true we should see things happening very soon.

      • The Richmond Heights Schnucks is also the busiest store in the chain. It is often unpleasant to shop at back the aisles are crowded, every checkout line open but still long and the parking lot full. It also doesn’t help the store is on the Wash U and SLU shuttle routes. A Maplewood Schnucks store would presumably help reduce some of the stress at that store and be busier than SnS was.

  12. With the price of food continually increasing (and it will go higher with fewer field workers, cost of gas, tariffs, etc), we certainly don’t need another overpriced grocery store. I’m really sick of stores with poor selection and too high prices.

    • You consider Schnucks overpriced? If you shop their sales and their store brand you will find they are quite reasonable.

  13. So excited for Schnucks! Love their produce and bakery offerings. What a great benefit for Maplewood! Thrilled we can continue to walk to the grocery with our kids.

  14. Glad it’s “just a grocery” and not Trader Joes or Lucky’s or something else elitist. There’s a lot of people in Maplewood and just outside of it who just want to buy milk and ground beef.

It seemed there was always a WIC customer in the line ahead of me at SNS. Not much else in walking distance for a lot of those folks.

    • Best comment. Absolutely right. Those who can afford a Trader Joe’s, Dierbergs, Luckys , Fresh Thyme and the like typically have the transportation to get them to those stores. Take care of those in the community who can use stores like Schnucks.

    • Trader Joe’s would have been great to have, decent food with decent prices. Schnucks is way over priced in my opinion. At least people with WIC can still get their stuff at Schuncks .

    • Huh? I buy 29 cent avocados and 99 cent berries at Luckys. They have wonderful pricing on various items. Much cheaper than schnucks

  15. I was hoping for something like Luckys, Fresh Thyme or even a Global Foods. There are already two Schnucks close by – one on Manchester/Brentwood and one on Clayton Rd. by the Esquire. I’m not a Schnucks fan, so I wanted something different, not just more of the same.

    • Exactly. Some of these comments are….interesting. very, very . Everything seems to be going that way maplewood… more of the same…one more chicken place and fast food place…UGH!!!

  16. The Shrewsbury Shop n Save on Chippewa is a lot larger store than the Maplewood one was and has acquired 13 of Maplewood’s employees. I have been very pleased with it.

      • I drive to the Shrewsbury store about 3 times a week, not as convenient, but a lot of the old employees that recognize me. It is only a 10 minute drive at most.

        • I rode my bike to the Shrewsbury SNS a couple of times since the Maplewood store closed. With that new path along McCausland/ Ellendale/ Wabash it wasn’t bad at all. This was on warm sunny days, doing it in a cold rain might be another story.

  17. They sure as heck better fix that store up. If it’s just another Brentwood style Schnucks that looks like its from the 70s wth crappy produce and terrible wine selection then I’d say it’s a huge loss for Maplewood.
