As a little girl, I would go there (I lived on Cecelia, and my girlfriend and I would walk down to the “fruit stand” or “Brengards” as we called it…and would buy a coconut. We would take it home and have her grandpa open it up for us, and then we would enjoy the coconut inside. He used to drink the coconut milk, as I seem to remember. My dad always got the Christmas tree from there on Christmas Eve after the store closed. In those days, we all (I was the oldest of five) went to bed, and when we woke up on Christmas morning, Santa had come, and brought our tree, and our Christmas stockings full of good things, and all our presents. My dad said they weren’t open, so he never could pay. Mr Brengard told me years later, they threw the trees out the day after Christmas anyway….so it didn’t hurt. Fun memories.
Were they actually rehabbing it? I’ve been thinking for some time it looked as if they were getting ready to demolish it.
