Last May the Brentwood Board of Aldermen rejected newly elected mayor Chris Thornton’s committee appointments; Alderman Andy Leahy proposed alternative appointments, which Thornton rejected. This year the board approved Thornton’s appointments unanimously.
In the board of aldermen meeting on Tuesday Thornton said the aldermen’s education, professional certifications or degrees, background and experience; and also their personal preferences guided his decisions on who would be on each committee.
He said he knew some of the aldermen would like a hard and fast rule for one person from each ward on each committee. He said he doesn’t think a hard and fast rule is a good idea, but it’s a good idea to try, as long as long as the other criteria he mentioned can be met.
“I think if you look at this list, I tried to do that, and in all but one or two cases I was able to do that,” Thornton said.
