Maplewood is one of the best places in the country to have Saison, a beer that originated in southern Belgium, according to Paste Magazine.
Side Project Brewing’s Saison Du Blé is rated the number one Saison in the country. It’s at the Side Project Cellar (7373 Marietta Avenue). Side Project’s Saison Du Fermier is rated third in the country.
Paste Magazine’s ‘Blind-Tasting and Ranking 35 of the Best American Saisons‘ did the ranking.
The magazine called the Saison Du Blé “a panoply of fruit notes that practically defy description—sour apple, grape juice, pineapple, grapefruit and more, all singing in concert. The tartness enhances fruit flavors but isn’t what one would call “sharp”—rather, it’s velvety smooth and supple, allowing you to get lost in the complexities of flavors.”
Cory King, head brewer for Perennial Beer, in south St. Louis, and owner of Side Project Brewing and the Side Project Cellar, brewed both beers.
