A visiting ‘friend’ stole a laptop computer from a Maplewood apartment, according to police and court records.
The victim reported that Hawkins, a friend of hers, was visiting from Kansas City, staying at her apartment, in the 7300 block of Manchester Road in Maplewood. On January 4, the victim left her apartment in the morning to go to work, leaving Hawkins behind. When she returned, Hawkins was gone, as well as the victim’s Dell laptop computer, valued at $600.
Investigation revealed that Hawkins pawned the stolen laptop in downtown Maplewood. She was arrested several months later. She admitted pawning the laptop but said she had done so at the victim’s request in order to pay the electric bill. She denied stealing the laptop.
