Work continued on the Ryan Hummert Memorial Plaza on Monday. The wording on the memorial was proofread, before being sandblasted into the granite surface at a later date. The contract worker onsite said the only changes were adding some periods.
Signs have been posted, stating ‘No skateboarding’ and also ‘Stay off the monument’.
It’s not known exactly when the bronze statue of Ryan Hummert will be delivered.

- Ryan Hummert sculpture, veterans memorial, new fire house before Maplewood council
UPPER CASE DOES NOT WORK WELL AS SHOWN HERE ON THE MONUMENT. LET’S CHANGE THAT SINCE IT IS BEING REDONE.
The text is informal and conversational and will read and feel better in mixed case.
Doug, do you know if this design was ever presented to the design and review board? Or was it just presented at city council?
Yikes. Reads like it was written by a 4th grader.
I can’t wait to see the site finished. Maplewood needs more tributes to its heroes. Hopefully they dust off the veterans plaques that are in storage and get them on display at City Hall or a park. I think one may be on display by the flagpole at City Hall. I haven’t looked closely at it. Does anyone know what that one displays?
Now that the memorial is nearly finished what is going to happen to the lots where the two houses stood? In my mind, full healing of the neighborhood will happen when at least one of those lots has a house again.
I agree, i think enough time has passed and its time to put new houses there again. Seeing them empty still is a sad reminder every time I pass by.
Seriously? This is what we get? I’m embarrassed that this is going to represent us – at the very least someone knowledgeable needed to review the wording before this went in.
They should have hired a professional to do the proofreading.
And to design the memorial.
Not spell-checked enough. “Persue” is misspelled.
And “athlete” (or athletic) in the 2nd paragraph.
Proofreading is tricky because the human brain can correct what the eye sees.
Tricky? Yes. Errors sandblasted into granite? Not acceptable.
That’s why you need a professional to do it.
