After 51 years, Maplewood Richmond Heights baseball on Tuesday won their district championship, 5-3, against Brentwood. The last time MRH won districts was 1963, according to coach, Jonathan Webb.
MRH lost to Brentwood in the district final 4-3 in Webb’s first year as head coach, four years ago. They lost to Brentwood last year 14-4.
This year, batting as the home team in Brentwood Park, MRH took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with Chris Tronicek and Jacob Speed singling and Gabe Jackson and Rich Rassmussen getting the RBIs.
Brentwood tied it in the fourth, but MRH answered in the bottom of the inning with three more.
Senior, Rich Rassmussen pitched for MRH into the fifth, when Zech Biship took over with two on and no outs, and retired the side.
Brentwood senior Dylan McGehee went the distance for the Eagles.
MRH’s next game is Monday at noon at Maplewood (Deer Creek Park) against the winner of the Jefferson-St. Pius game, on Thursday.
