Dan Lesseg, co-owner of the corner where the new Maplewood QuikTrip opened on Thursday, has shared photos from the 1960s and 1980s of the corner.

The black and white photo was taken in 1965, by the sign on the wall — “Available now – 1965 Mustangs Falcons Fairlanes Thunderbirds.” The shop was part of Cavalier Ford, known for the ’57 Thunderbird in the showroom window that was there until the dealership was sold to Nadir Djavaherian, and became Auto Plaza Ford.

The color photo is from June, 1986, according to a note on the back. Lesseg pointed out that Shoney’s is on the southeast corner, and the buildings on the northwest corner hadn’t been painted grey yet.

  1. Another case of Corporate greed, Even though Caviler Ford was making money and keeping all those good folks working, Ford said your not selling enough Vehicles[ Ford of the late 80’s to middle 90’s]. They took the franchise and sold it. You know what happened.. Failure!!! I knew lots of people, Family, elderly, and single people who bought there over the years, it was a staple as I grew up,a land mark…All gone, another piece of history.

  2. The first Maplewood City Hall was on Sutton and the building still survives. The second City Hall was located at the NE corner of Manchester and Big Bend now occupied by the White Castle.

  3. Do I remember reading somewhere that the former corner building once was the location of the Maplewood City Hall? Or maybe it was not that building but an earlier one on the site. Could be that I’m mixing it up with some other spot.
