Farica Chang, a woman who’s family immigrated to St. Louis from Hong Kong 1969, writes about the resilience of her grandparents in opening the Chinese restaurant, Chopsticks House, in 1971, at 7270 Manchester Road in Maplewood.
Her article is: From Hong Kong to St. Louis: A Legacy of Resilience
One of the photos she uses is from the collection of Maplewood historic photos, and was also used in an article by Doug Houser, Maplewood History: A Look at Downtown Shortly Before the Demolitions Began.
We went there on Sunday evenings. Loved the Chopsticks House! Even when we saw a huge cockroach on the wall one evening—attracted by the spices I imagine— we were not deterred! (Like we were when a friend discovered one in a hamburger at ___________, still a popular place in the City of St. Louis.)
I don’t remember exactly what we ordered but I remember eating at Chopsticks House in the early 70s. I believe it was before I moved to Maplewood in 1975. They didn’t have a liquor license but it was OK to bring your own beer which I happily did. Thank you to Ms. Chang for sharing her family story, part of our history, too, with us.
