A bicyclist that apparently didn’t yield to traffic at S. Big Bend and Flora Avenue Saturday afternoon was struck by a car, according to two witnesses that emailed 40 South News, asking about his condition.

“He was hit pretty hard!” Michelle Gibson said. “I don’t know what he was thinking. He darted right out in front of two cars. The first one missed him, but the second guy didn’t see him in time and hit him. Knocked him in the air and knocked his shoes off his feet.”

Another asked, “Do you know if the man in the bicycle accident died on Saturday at Big Bend and Flora? It looked awful his bike was creamed.”

The bicyclist was injured but is now out of the hospital, according to Maplewood Police.

  1. “Share the road” means put a 200-lb. person and bike on the same road with 3 to 4000-lb. vehicles, going at a slower pace. Gee, what could go wrong?

  2. How very sad. It awful when someone get hurt no matter what the circumstance. Share the Road only works when everyone obeys the rules of the road. Not so long ago I almost hit one of our older Maplewood citizen on his bike. His name will go unmentioned. He flew through a stop sign and gave me a dirty look. Hopefully he won’t he the next to be hit by a car.
