The Texas 4000 bike riders from the University of Texas came through Maplewood Monday and Tuesday on a trip from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, to raise money for cancer research.

Three separate groups are taking separate routes to reach more people with their message.

The Ozarks Route riders will ride through Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, then into Canada and through the provinces and territories of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon before finishing in Anchorage.

The approximately 30 riders were treated to barbecue at Sense Corp. in Maplewood on Monday. Tuesday was a rest day and they left Wednesday morning from Maplewood Richmond Heights school, where they spent the night.

Each rider had to raise $4,500 personally to qualify for the trip. The Ozarks Route group is pushing $600,000, and would like to hit $1 million before the route is complete.
