He recently changed his program over to the Iron Tribe model, re-outfitting his space and retraining his coaches in the process. He drove to Alabama to check it out.

“It was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I just knew I had to bring it back to St. Louis,” he said.

He said the big difference is that it’s a group setting. “What I have found is that the client gets used to the trainer, and isn’t pushed as hard as they could be,” he said. “When you put them in this setting with other people, and you set a clock and turn the timer on — as soon as that happens they all start working out much harder.”

He said It offers the ability for more people to come in and train at a lower price point.

Personal training in St. Louis averages $60 and up per session, Baum said. “In here they can work out 24 times a month for as little as $11 a session with better coaching and two coaches on them all the time.”

Everyone there is part of a tribe, he said. “They all know each other; they’re supporting each other. They’ve got they’re own little tribe within the tribe.”
