A Brentwood resident reported to 40 South News Saturday that a burglar broke into a house on Cecelia Avenue last week.

It happened at a home at the north end of Cecelia. The family involved said their garage door was slightly open and a burglar apparently squeezed through that opening and stole a lot of stuff on the first floor of the home while the family was sleeping on the second floor. The thief also found the keys to the family’s minivan and stole that. The minivan was recovered.

Update: The van was recovered in St. Louis city, and the investigation into the burglary is ongoing, according to Brentwood Chief of Police Dan Fitzgerald.

  1. Locking the door is the best idea. Having a dog to alert you and make a bunch of noise to expose the bad guy, would be good, too. Those people are very lucky.

  2. Instead of “go after anybody who doesn’t look right.” Maybe you could get to know your neighbors. Go for a walk. Talk to members of your community. I sure hope that I “look right” so no one comes after me. Because I can’t control how I “look.” I am who I am.

    • I’m sorry Elizabeth—i did not intend that to come out the way it did. The intention was that there are some characteristic actions of scoping out an area for bad intentions. I said “how they look”. That was wrong. The intent referred to that internal sense that someone you see is lost and needs re-direction, OR they are scoping out an area for best opportunities for planned criminal events. When you live somewhere for a while you recognize patterns of your neighbors, their families and visitors–and people who are evaluating an area of safety compromised zones to burgle and rob at an opportune time. i really am sorry for not being more careful with my phrasing–really. thanks maureen

  3. Damn it. This peeves me to no end. Very grateful family was not involved during the commission of crime. Damn it. What is the likelihood of having discrete surveillance cameras with night vision lenses installed? Are there (State/ Federal) grants available to facilitate this protective measure? Old as i am, i go after anybody who doesn’t look right. And i’m not stopping anytime soon…Frustrated on behalf of Brentwood an FR’s. love, maureen
