The Brentwood School District invites the community to meetings to discuss any modifications that might be needed to the buildings.

The invitation from the school district:

Dear Brentwood Community Members,

On February 14, 2020, the Brentwood School District will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the citizens’ vote to establish a community school district. While the original school buildings from that time are now gone, our existing buildings may require updates to meet the needs of educating children in the 21st century and serving the community beyond the school day. During this school year, the District will be hosting a number of community meetings to gather input on how to ensure that any modifications to our K-12 buildings will meet our community’s needs now and in the future. The Board of Education encourages you to participate in the process of developing the vision for our facilities.

Effective school programs produce good citizens and well-educated workers. Good school facilities help bring the broader community together for life-long learning and community recreation and engagement. High-quality educational programs and facilities that serve the entire community help to maintain property values over time. As the Board of Education considers how best to maintain and update school facilities, they are encouraging community members to provide input on the ideal role of school facilities as a part of the neighborhood.

Please join us for one of the community meetings noted below. Each meeting will follow the same format, but the meetings will be repeated on three campuses so that community members may tour the facilities before each meeting. In each meeting, a facilitator will lead the groups through a series of questions to help discern how our facilities might best be used for education and community enrichment. An optional facilities tour will be held before each meeting at 6:30 p.m. The discussion groups will meet from 7 – 8:30 p.m. as listed below:

  • McGrath Elementary: Wednesday, October 19 (library)
  • Brentwood Middle School and High School: Thursday, November 3 (cafeteria)
  • Mark Twain Elementary: Monday, November 7 (library)

If you are able to attend one of the meetings, please RSVP to Kate Hastings at 314-962-4507 or [email protected] so that we can plan appropriately for the meeting spaces.

During the months of November and December, we will work with our consultant to process the information we have collected. After winter break, we will announce new meetings to share information we have gathered and to refine the vision for facilities that will allow us to develop specific recommendations with architectural planners.

Your involvement in each step of the process will have a lasting effect on the Brentwood School District well into its second century of operation, and we thank you in advance for any time you can give to the process.

The Beekmans’ house was completed in 1930, 3 years after the original BHS building, and is still standing. At one time, it served not only as the Beekmans’ residence but as a luncheonette-confectionary for BHS students. The young, bright-green tree in the front lawn of the high school near the left edge of the photo is the post oak. Photo courtesy Barry Williams
