Brentwood to vote on fee for vacant houses with code violations

Brentwood voters will have the only local-level proposition to decide in the area on Tuesday.

City officials in August approved putting Proposition 1 on the ballot in November, which would approve a $200 semi-annual fee charged to the owner of a vacant house with code violations. The $200 is to cover administrative costs.

After an investigation, the city can notify the owner of a vacant house with code violations that they have to register and pay the fee. If the owner brings the property up to code within 30 days there is no charge.

Proposition 1 on the ballot because Missouri’s Hancock Amendment requires a vote on anything that could be seen as a tax increase.
