Saying he wants to be a good neighbor, Side Project Brewing owner Cory King at the city council meeting on Tuesday, pulled his request to rezone an empty lot on Hazel Avenue that he had planned to use as a parking lot for the brewery on Manchester Road.

King said there might be a possibility of a compromise in the future. He bought the property last year. John Niehaus, who lives next to the empty lot, said he still fears a possibility of commercial encroachment.

At the planning and zoning meeting the previous week the commission voted 5-1 to recommend to the city council not to rezone the lot from residential to commercial. Many neighbors on Hazel Avenue and other nearby streets told the commission of their concerns of businesses intruding on residential areas.

The council also approved a liquor license for Hongkham Chantharasy for 7219 Manchester Road. Chantharasy had planned to open a Thai/Laotian restaurant at the location in 2021. The plan now is for a market with prepared foods. He owns Robata Restaurant, across Manchester Road from the location.

Also Julie Mathis explained her idea for a shop called Happy Pax. She said she has a large collection of “adorable things” for groups to use to make items to attach to backpacks and other purposes. The shop would be at 2867 Laclede Station Road. The council held the first and second votes. The final vote is set for the next council meeting.
