Maplewood Chamber of Commerce features a different business each month. This month it’s Wellness Alley, LLC.

Business Name:
Wellness Alley, LLC

Owned by:

Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Certified Health Coach

How would you describe Wellness Alley, LLC?
I started my private practice after working in the health care field for more than 23 years. I am a therapist who helps people face life challenges and chronic health issues, and to overcome stress, lack of motivation, negative thoughts and obstacles that keep them from reaching their goals. I also have specialized training in addictions and compassion fatigue in the workplace.

In my long history of also working with animals, I have competed in dog competitions (agility, obedience, conformation) and have trained two golden retrievers to become certified pet therapy dogs, one of which also became a certified crisis-response dog. I have seen the radical change pets make in people’s recovery and lives.

The human-animal connection is a powerful thing, but so too is the grief after losing a pet. I’ve received advanced training in veterinary social work and help people handle the loss of their beloved pets and any challenges experienced with animals. I also work with veterinarians, other veterinary professionals and animal rescue team members who experience compassion fatigue after dealing with difficult decisions and loss on a regular basis. Sharing my therapy dogs and helping pet-lovers through their own challenges as caregivers are important parts of my career as a social worker.

What is the most exciting thing happening right now with your business or industry?
I’m excited that therapy is becoming more acceptable and that people are seeking help in order to regain power and control over their lives. I’m also excited to see the specialization in veterinary social work and the bond between humans and animals being recognized and valued. Research that is proving the health and social benefits of pet therapy will allow this area of practice to grow.

Do you have a “favorite” Maplewood or Richmond Heights business other than your own?
There are several local businesses I enjoy regularly. I want to encourage people to check out Breath of Life (where I have my office), which offers massages and chiropractic care, and has a wonderful room for yoga and meditation. One place I frequent often is Garden Heights Nursery. I love its unique gifts, beautiful plants and personalized attention. Employees there are knowledgeable and have offered help with my water garden and terrariums. My green thumb is a work in progress; I appreciate their patience with my endless questions!
