Brentwood football went 10-0 last year until falling to Herman 34-15 in the post season. Head coach Keith Herring said Monday before practice that most of the team is back.
“We were pretty young last year and we got all those guys back,” he said. “I think we’re a little bit ahead of where we were last year in the offense.”
Senior running back Jacob Clay, who finished 2014 with 2,554 yards and 45 touchdowns is back, “stronger and faster,” Herring said. “We’re just waiting to see what he can do.”
He also said quarterback, Skyler Sappington is back. “He’s done a great job in the weight room – really gotten stronger. He looks thick now.”
Herring said the line is not quite as big as in the past, partly because they’re younger, but he said they can run, which is good for the Eagles offense.
“Everybody should be able to contribute, because they had a little experience last year, and our freshmen are looking good. We only have 26-27 guys, but hopefully they can all help us out,” he said.
Herring said his players talked for a day or two about Maplewood Richmond Heights canceling football for the year due to a lack of student interest. He said they asked if Brentwood might get some of the MRH players to play for the Eagles. He said he doubted it.
“It would force us to go up and we can’t afford to do that,” Herring said. “As small as we are we’d have to get a hundred kids to make it worth our while. We’re the smallest Class 2 team I think.”
Brentwood’s first game is Aug. 21 against Crystal City at Hillsboro. Herring said Crystal City’s field was flooded and they’re still cleaning it up. The water came up to the scoreboard he said.
The Eagles first home game is against Kennedy on Aug. 28
