Gateway Greening is giving area residents the chance to clean out their backyard gardens for a good cause during April, as part of its annual Great Perennial Divide.
The event gives gardeners the chance to donate their unwanted ornamental plants at a variety of collection sites in the area; one is in Richmond Heights, at 26 Berkshire Drive, 63117, 314-995-9828.
The donated items will then be provided, at no cost, to area community gardeners to help them fill and beautify their gardens. Gardeners will receive their plants at The Carriage House, at 3815 Bell Avenue, from April 30 to May 2, according to a press release from Gateway Greening.
Plant donations for the Great Perennial Divide are currently being accepted. A complete list of the plants that may be donated is available at www.gatewaygreening.org.
“The Great Perennial Divide offers a great opportunity for backyard gardeners to share plant material they no longer need or want with community gardeners in search of ornamentals to enhance their gardens,” said Hannah Reinhart, garden program director. “However, this event wouldn’t be possible without the many generous plant donations we receive from the community. We encourage anyone who’s looking to clean up their backyard garden to consider donating their unwanted plant materials to this great cause.”
In addition to plant donations, Gateway Greening is also in need of volunteers to assist with its on-site “digs” and to help organize plants and set-up signage in advance of the plant distribution days at The Carriage House. Experienced ornamental gardeners are also needed to assist community gardeners in selecting plants that are suitable for their garden sites during the plant distribution days.
