If you lose water and call Missouri American Water to report it you’ll reach a call center that serves 24 states, so if you say you’re in Maplewood, make sure they know that’s Missouri not New Jersey.

Water was out on Marietta Avenue Saturday morning, but the 7300 block of Manchester didn’t seem to be affected. The Crow’s Nest was OK.

One of those folks from the water company said there were 14 water main breaks reported in St. Louis on Saturday, and “hundreds and hundreds” in St. Louis County since Tuesday. She said my call on Saturday was one of 300 in the queue.

“Wow,” she said as she was going through the listed breaks. “Sorry I keep saying wow.” She said she hadn’t seen this many breaks in the nine years she’s worked for American Water.

She said she lives in Florida and had 12 degrees with wind chill. “I can’t imagine what you all are going through up there,” she said.

The break that affected Marietta was on Marshall Avenue and was promised to be fixed by 4 p.m. They fixed it by noon, and a Missouri Water guy knocked on our door at 12:30 to check.
