A building on Yale Avenue in Maplewood is being renovated. It was formerly a TV repair shop, a family member of the former owner said.

2156 Yale Avenue was the Dufer family’s television repair shop, owned by the father, Don, then the oldest son, Doug.

Dale Dufer, still in the area, said all five brothers — Doug, Dan, Dennis, Dale and Dallas — carried ‘tube caddies’ for home visit repairs, and also TV sets. Dale said the old TVs, with big tubes lined in lead, glass an inch thick at the front, set in a metal chassis were very heavy.

He said his dad started the shop in the early 1960s. It closed down when TVs could no longer be repaired. It was sold recently. Dale said a real estate office is planned for the spot.

  1. Wow. I had no idea there was a TV repair shop there and I’ve walked by a million times.. Shows how much good signage helps, we could’ve used them in the past.

  2. I was hoping for a restaurant, coffee shop, etc. Something us neighbors might use daily. Regardless happy to see it restored.

  3. The detail being restored to the outside of this building makes it one of those small joys to drive bye. Looking forward to the finished product.

  4. Good to know this. Will share with others who remember this shop and the excellent service the Dufers provided–
