Group pushes for opposition to new McGrath road

The Brentwood Board of Education is going to bid for a road from High School Drive to the parking lot at McGrath Elementary to reroute traffic for parents dropping off and picking up students.

The Brentwood Board of Aldermen in June approved a curb cut on High School Drive to make the road possible.

A group of residents opposed to the new road, citing safety, water run-off, tree removal and other concerns are hoping residents come to the school board meeting on August 16 to show opposition.

One of those, Barry Williams, sent a copy of their flier to 40 South:

ATTENTION NEIGHBORS:  Did you know…

The Brentwood School District is proposing to build a new road on the McGrath Elementary school campus. This one-way road will be accessed from High School Drive at Harrison Ave and run west, along the far end of the field and playground area. It will then connect to the circle drive and exit at St. Clair Ave. The purpose of this road is to alleviate the current school traffic on St. Clair Ave, that occurs during the morning  and afternoon drop off & pick up hours. This means that all McGrath traffic will now be diverted to High School Drive and as you may know, High School Drive already experiences traffic back-ups from Litzsinger to White Ave with middle school and high school traffic each morning and afternoon. Imagine how it’s going to be with the additional McGrath traffic added to this area.

But that’s not all….. SEVERAL OTHER AREAS OF CONCERN INCLUDE:

    • With all the additional traffic being shifted to High School Drive, will the area be supervised by school staff?
    • What about the safety of students who walk along that sidewalk that will now have a drive through along their walking route?
    • What about increasing water run-off, due to less ground area with this additional pavement and how will it effect the Stratford Lane neighbors whose back yards will now run alongside this new roadway?
    • What about the loss of 13 large, beautiful and healthy trees that provide shade over the playground area, as these trees are proposed to be cut down to make way for this new access road?
    • Who else will have access to this road during off school hours. The Firetruck or Police Vehicles? What about cut through traffic, or will it be gated during off school hours?
    • How much will this project cost and is the cost worth making such a drastic change to the landscape for approximately 15 minutes of traffic inconvenience in the morning and afternoon during the 9 month school year?
    • There are other options available that do not include building an access road.

PLEASE JOIN US TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THIS PROPOSAL AND/OR TAKE AN OPPORTUNITY TO VOICE ANY ISSUES & CONCERNS YOU MAY HAVE AT THE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, AUGUST 16th AT 7 PM AT THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE LOCATED AT 1201 HANLEY INDUSTRIAL COURT IN BRENTWOOD. THANK YOU!

The board of education meets at 1201 Hanley Industrial Court, Brentwood.

  1. Why can’t these kids simply walk from HS Drive? Or better yet walk from home??? It’s a tiny little district. What’s the need for a closer drop off? Get some exercise…There seems to be no problem walking around to find Pokemon? We are finally waking up to the need to be green, and now you wastefully and needlessly want to cut down trees? There is nothing right about this plan. I’ve lived near the school for 60 years on St. Clair and have managed to get up and down the street without much trouble when the police enforce the no left turn sign from the driveway and no parking sign across from the school. We have solutions to the drop off situation we just need to enforce them.

  2. I would like the citizens watch the overweight children getting out of there parents cars. Why can’t children walk to school. If their parents are afraid the child will be accosted by someone then mom or dad should walk them to school. Whats the big deal about walking?

  3. I totally agree with Barry’s comments! I have dropped off a child at McGrath and it only takes about 15 minutes to get through. Not a big deal!
