Derrick Cartwright, 37, of Florissant was charged by Maplewood police with receiving stolen property after knowingly trying to cash in on a lost, then stolen, iPhone.

The victim reported that she lost her iPhone while shopping at the Maplewood Walmart store. A review of surveillance video showed a man picking up her phone on the ground near the exit, according to court and police records.

After the victim lost her phone she sent a text message from her daughter’s phone to her stolen phone, offering a $500 reward for its return.

Cartwright responded to the message and arranged to meet her at a Walgreens store in Florissant. The victim notified Florissant police, who arrested Cartwright when he showed up with her phone. Cartwright told Florissant police that he had been approached by an unknown man at the Shrewsbury Metrolink station, who offered to trade the phone for some marijuana — they made the trade.

Cartwright told Maplewood police he found the phone at an unspecified location and decided to keep it rather than trying to find its owner.

Also at the Maplewood Walmart:

Viola Faulkner, 58, of St. Louis was charged with scratching both sides of a 2011 Nissan Versa parked at the Maplewood Walmart on July 14.

According to court and police records, surveillance video showed Faulkner walk on both sides of the victim’s car while the victim was in the store, and even stand next to it for a moment. She was the only person captured by video at the car while the victim was inside the store.
