The Book House bookstore in Maplewood is hoping to hire two or three new employees by the end of September, according to owner Michelle Barron.

Follow these instructions, from the Book House, to apply:

To apply please submit a resume along with three references  (including contact info)  and a cover letter essay detailing why you are interested in becoming a bookseller, Must be enrolled in, or have graduated college or have related experience or degree work. Please list school and major. Below are some of the skill set/job requirements we are looking for in a bookseller.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Booksellers work with authors, publishers, customers, community partners, fellow staff, suppliers, and the public, and great customer service skills is a must.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.  The ability to respond to the diverse challenges of this position, skills for planning ahead and anticipating future needs, able to prioritize and be self motivated.
  • Working knowledge of books and authors. (If the last book you read was Twilight in 2007 this is probably not the place for you!)  Please list any prior experience in event planning, retail sales,  and/or the book or publishing business.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Minimum of basic computer competencies including MS Office, web-based programs, data entry and typing skills, and social media,  graphic design skills are helpful.
  • Ability to lift 40 pound boxes of books and to climb up and down stairs and ladders, and work on your feet for most of the day.
  • Ability to follow directions, work with a team, discuss and resolve conflicts, accept constructive criticism and work with a diverse staff.

Applicants should be self-motivated, interested in learning our business, and invested in our image and our mission, and also able to commit to at least a year with the company.
