Craft Beer Cellar co-owner Brandon Nickelson emailed 40 South on Wednesday, saying he’s been having a hard time getting Maplewood council members to respond to him, but wanted to share letters of recommendation he received from Maplewood business owners.

Maplewood officials voted down Craft Beer Cellar’s request for a conditional use permit to operate in Maplewood at its July 12 meeting. The business has a location in Clayton; Maplewood would be its second.

Karen King (co-owner of Side Project Cellar with her husband, Cory King) and Dan Kopman (co-founder of Schlafly Beer) both wrote letters to the council members, arguing for Craft Beer Cellar to be in Maplewood.

Nickelson said he sent the letters to the council members, sent them a presentation, invited them to visit their Clayton store, and called them. He said he’s hoping to get consideration for another chance at the August 9 council meeting.

  1. I emailed both councilmen for Ward 2. I received a reply AND a phone call from Tim Dunn. Councilman Dunn wrote, “We’re looking into bringing it back up because of the response we’ve gotten.” When he phoned, he made mention the feedback on the decision has been incredible. I received no response from Fred Wolf.

  2. Just saw the agenda for next Tuesday meeting — nothing on it about Craft Beer Cellar.

    Let’s make our voices heard.

  3. Not surprising the council won’t respond. Barry is the only one of them that seems to be engaged in a discussion with anyone. He’s also the only one that initially voted for Craft Beer Cellar. I don’t know if there’s been any progress in getting this on the agenda for next weeks council meeting, but hopefully it is.

    • Alex – FYI, Ward 2 Councilman Tim Dunn was absent from the meeting. That wasn’t in the article originally. It is now.

  4. I emailed both of Ward 2 Councilmen, sharing support for the business as a private resident. I received a response from both. The responses seemed as if they were willing to reconsider.

  5. this says it all: “Maplewood council nixes craft beer, OKs cat cafe”.

which one do you think will last longer…

    • What does one have to do with the other? Both businesses have every reason to think they will succeed.

      • ‘Oh, little snowflakes, when did you all become grandmothers and society matrons, clutching your pearls in horror at someone who has an opinion about something, a way of expressing themselves that’s not the mirror image of yours?’
