Maplewood commission OKs ordinance to allow craft beer shop

In addition to giving approval to Raising Cane’s restaurant on Wednesday, Maplewood Planning and Zoning approved an amendment to the Community Business District to  allow a package liquor store that sells only ‘craft beer’ — no hard liquor, tobacco or lottery tickets.

This follows last month’s meeting where an owner of Craft Beer Cellar, in Clayton, presented a plan to open a second location in Maplewood; the city’s package liquor store ordinance needed tweaking to allow it.

The Clayton location sells a small amount of whiskey, which city assistant city manager, Anthony Traxler, said wouldn’t be allowed in Maplewood. The store, if approved by city council next week, will also offer beer-related classes, such as pairings and history. They also plan to offer cicerone beer server certification classes.

The Maplewood location would be at 7415 Manchester Road, where Maplewood Galleries closed recently.

The commission also approved a conditional use permit to allow Bolyard’s Meat & Provisions to have seating inside (12-15) for sandwiches. They already offer sandwiches daily. Co-owner Abby Bolyard answered the commission’s questions holding her one-month old daughter.

  1. Thanks Brian. I had no idea that Larder & Cupboard sold beer. I thought it just sold lard, and cupboards.

  2. In case you missed it, Maplewood already has a place that sells craft beer — Larder & Cupboard, a locally owned, independent small business. We were among the first in the region to carry Old Bakery Beer, and we’ll be the first to carry OBB North End IPA — tomorrow. We also offer classes, like Beer and Chocolate Pairing and Beer and Cheese Pairing.
