With one dissenting vote, Maplewood officials on Tuesday approved mosquito spraying by St. Louis County Vector Control this summer.

Councilman Barry Greenberg cast the only vote against spraying, out of environmental concerns. He tried to table the vote, to hear from experts that the Sustainability Commission has connections to, but didn’t get a second. He said Wednesday the city might be able to notify people of mosquito spraying times with the Code Red alert system.

Spraying in Maplewood will take place on Thursdays, according to the county schedule. Spraying begins at sunset. For specific information listing where spraying will occur tonight, call (314) 615-4284. A recorded message is updated daily between 4 and 6:00 p.m.

Also at the Tuesday council meeting, the reelected council members were sworn in: Karen Wood (Ward 1), Tim Dunn (Ward 2) and Barry Greenberg (Ward 3). All ran unopposed. Karen Wood was again elected deputy mayor.

The council also heard a plan by Friends of Woodside to preserve the historic house, Woodside, the oldest standing residence in Maplewood. Luke Havel, with the group, said Wednesday the council seemed seemed “engaged and generally interested.”

He said Councilman Barry Greenberg said he would like to see the group appoint a construction manager and safety manager, and Councilman Tim Dunn offered his place of business, a couple blocks away, as a staging point if the plan is OK’d.

  1. I bet Monsanto sponsored the studies showing that the pesticides are safe.

And I’ll never forget the beautiful evening walk last summer that ended with my wife and I running for cover during one of these gassings. But we nevertheless became trapped by the fog and I don’t remember much after that…
