Maplewood City Council on Tuesday, in a 12-minute meeting, passed three resolutions and had the first readings on ordinances to approve conditional use permits for two new businesses.

  • Approved a bid of $19,032 to replace the existing playground surface at Central Park (Elm and Walter). City Manager Marty Corcoran said the cost is similar to what was paid in the past.
  • Authorized the city manager to arrange a funding agreement between the city and developer for the already approved 19-acre planned unit development south of Sunnen on Hanley Road. Corcoran said after the meeting it means that the developer will reimburse the city for expenses involved like attorney and consultant fees. He said he doesn’t expect the development to begin soon because they have no incentives, though he said he’d be surprised if they tried for a TIF (tax increment financing).
  • Approved a resolution appointing Tim Alexander to fill a vacancy on the library board.
  • Approved an ordinance granting a conditional use permit to Ray Norris of Wise Warriors  to operate a fitness studio at 7403 Manchester Road. The final vote is due at the next council meeting.
  • Approved an ordinance granting a conditional use permit to Sheryl Coulter of Confluence Zen Community to operate a mediation studio at 3544 Oxford Avenue. The council questioned if there was a limit to how many can be in the business at one time (it’s 10), and if cars were limited (no). Planning and zoning was also concerned about parking at the business at its meeting last week. The final vote is due at the next council meeting.

A record store was approved at the same plan and zoning meeting as Confluence Zen Community but didn’t need approval from the council because a conditional use permit wasn’t required.

Corcoran asked, since no June 23 meeting is scheduled, if the council members could make it to a June 30 special meeting. They said they could.
