Maplewood nonprofit needs a bigger space

A Maplewood nonprofit that “fosters the social, intellectual, emotional and personal growth of artists with disabilities through creative self-expression” needs to move.

Artists First, formerly Turner Center for the Arts, moved from a space on south Sutton Boulevard to 7190 Manchester Road not quite two years ago, and they’ve already outgrown it.

Executive Director Sheila Suderwalla said in an email that in the past year participation has increased by 50 percent in many of the Artists First’s programs and they’re outgrowing their studio space.

“As a result of our artists needing more space, we respectfully are requesting your support. Artists First is in need of a new affordable home of at least 2,500 square feet that is centrally located in a warm and accepting community,” Suderwalla said.

We invite you to join us during this exciting time of growth by making a financial tax-deductible or in kind donation and or through collaborating with us in our search for a new home. With your support Artists First can continue “to show the world what we can do in our unique way.”

  1. Doug, has there been any update to this story? Looking if you can find out if there is any truth to the rumor I heard. The group was interested in the vacant space next to Shop N Save and attempted to call the property owner but were not getting their phone call returned. They have since gone to city hall and city hall has decided to help them in finding space, although it may not be the vacancy next to shop n save. Hope the story turns out to be false and this not a case of discrimination. Thanks.
