Maplewood officials set to improve ‘nudity’ definition

Maplewood City Council is set to define nudity and semi-nudity more specifically in its ordinances at its meeting on Tuesday, and body paint doesn’t count.

According City Manager Marty Corcoran, due to a recent event in a neighboring municipality the city reviewed its ordinance governing nudity and felt its ordinances dealing with nudity and liquor licenses needed improving.

The University City restaurant, Social House, with female servers wearing little more than body paint, opened in March following some back-and forth between the city and the restaurant owner’s attorney.

The proposed Maplewood bill would amend the definitions of nudity and semi-nudity in the business section of the city code and add it to prohibited actions in the liquor license section. ‘Opaque fabric covering’ over certain areas of the body would be required.

The council will also recognize Lieutenant Bill Appel, retiring from the fire department after 27 years of service, and Ken LeClerc, after 17 years of service with the public works department as a carpenter and forester. Neither Appel or LeClerc will be present.

Mary Killian and Nick Gross will be appointed to the newly-formed Mid-County Senior Citizens Commission. The purpose of the commission will be to advise the city in senior citizen policy. One more member is needed.

The council will consider a resolution to apply for the 2017 Community Development Block Grant application. Last year the city allocated the entire $64,000 to the Home improvement Loan Program due to high demand.

The officials will also consider a resolution to accept a bid of $21,345 to provide a pre-hospital cardiac monitor/defibrillator, and an ordinance granting a conditional use permit to Thriven Financial to operate an office at 3008 Sutton Boulevard.

  1. As the primary caregiver for my elderly mother for years when she lived in Maplewood I would love to join that committee. I am in my fifties but have ideas that could benefit the older residents. How do I offer my ideas or join? Will I be denied due to my “youth”? Lol

    • ‘Community member’ – I’d suggest you call Maplewood City Hall about this. (314) 645-3600
