The Maplewood Plan and Zoning Commission has scheduled an “informal discussion” about tattoo parlors at its meeting on Monday.
Tattoo parlors are prohibited on street level in the Community Business District, which is Manchester Road from Roseland Terrace to Sutton Avenue.
Pawnshops, massage parlors, licensed betting stores and “other uses which the plan and zoning commission determines to be of an immoral or illegal nature” are also prohibited in Maplewood’s central business district.
D&R Pawn & Jewelry, at 7364 Manchester Road, which seems to be existing against a city ordinance, was grandfathered in according to City Manager Marty Corcoran. Maplewood Pawn, in the Special Business District, was also grandfathered in.
The one other thing on the P&Z agenda is a request to rezone 2409 Florent Avenue from single family to arterial business, so the owner can use the lot for his customers to picnic on.
Yea tattoos signal the end of civilization in Maplewood. Not heroin, homelessness, poverty, unemployment, perverts, criminals, hungry children, wife beaters…..its tattoos!
Please, everyone and their brother has tattoos nowadays. Older/more curmudgeonly residents need to lose the idea that tattoos are only for criminals and undesirables. If you’ve ever been to the Maplewood pool in the summer you know that Maplewood residents have tattoos, a rough guess would be at least 85% of people seen at the pool have at least one tattoo. If those people were getting their tattoos in Maplewood, any business tax dollars would stay in Maplewood.
On closer reflection, it’s probably closer to half the people seen at the pool, but it’s still a lot of people.
It’s sad to think of a tat parlor coming to the area. there isn’t a big distinction between the lower end of culture between shark loan pawn shops and tatoo parlors; both are regretable options.
It’s sad to think that you lack the intellectual power to distinguish between a shark loan pawn shop and a tattoo shop. Use your brain, one is economically exploitative and a clear drain on society, and one is a professional service related to personal appearance, not unlike a hair salon. They are so clearly not the same thing!
