The owner of two antique stores in the 2300 block of Big Bend in Maplewood wants to use a vacant lot behind the stores, but the neighbors shouldn’t be concerned.

Dan Stevens, owner of the Big Bend Antique Mall, owns the lot at the corner of Florent and Jerome avenues.

“We’d like our customers at the antique malls to be able to go back there and maybe have a picnic lunch or something like that,” he said. “We get a lot of people visiting from out of town. It’s kind of a destination spot for antiques, with the two buildings there.”

The plan and zoning commission will considers Stevens’ request at its meeting on Nov. 4. Stevens said it’s zoned residential now, and technically he can’t use it for his customers without it being rezoned.

“We’re not going to put any buildings there. Nothing in the works for any kind of commercial development,” he said. “The two antique malls are going to stay just the way they are.”
