Maplewood plan and zoning approved on Monday — for recommendation to city council — a childcare center, a micro-brewery, and amendments to a planned unit development for apartments and car dealerships.

The commission approved a 24-hour daycare center at 2305 S. Big Bend — the house south of Folk Avenue, after the building that last housed Studio Altius.

Owner Carrie McGee said the state has approved the facility for up to four children; the next steps up would be approval for 10, then 20 children. Plan and zoning approved the center for up to 10 children.

McGee said they are hoping to make a difference in a mother’s life who has to either work 2nd shifts or work two jobs and is in need of child care.

A commission member was concerned that the house wouldn’t go over its limit for children. McGee said the state can inspect the facility anytime unannounced. City assistant manager, Anthony Traxler said the city would inspect it annually as part of the business license.

McGee said in a letter to the city that she and her two daughters will share in the childcare duties. One daughter is attending college to advance her career in special education. The other plans to take classes to advance in early childhood education. They have both worked in childcare previously.

A cleared lot next to the house will be used for parking, with access onto Folk, not Big Bend.

The commission also approved amendments to the planned unit development on S. Hanley Road (south of Sunnen Products) where an apartment complex, and Porsche and Maserati dealerships have been approved.

Plan and zoning also approved a micro-brewery at 7458 Manchester Road. Cory King, owner of Side Project Brewing, plans to move his operations to the 7,800 square foot building on Manchester.
