Lohmeyer Avenue between the Maplewood library and Bredell is being widened to accommodate 2-way traffic and parking, and a historic stone wall will be preserved in the process.

City assistant city manager/director of public works, Anthony Traxler said the road will be widened from 16 to 22 feet wide with an additional 9 feet for parking on the south side.

The city will also be adding a 5-foot sidewalk on the south side (there is no sidewalk on the south side currently).

The current wall on the south side will be disassembled and reassembled in its new location in front of a new structural retaining wall. Traxler said, “We are keeping this wall because it has great historical significance.”

East of the work, Martini Drive, Gerhard and Oakland avenues are being repaved.

Workers lay a new sidewalk on Oakland Avenue as part of the repaving project.

  1. Angela, Roger is correct, in that this is sorely needed. The school district had the city make Martini one way south bound which further limits access into the area behind the high school. Coming North on Big Bend, a turn to the west on Rannells is not always feasible.

  2. Is this something there should have been a vote on? My kids and I enjoyed that little but of green space on the corner on our walk to the library. Sad there will be more concrete in a big sea of pool parking lot. It didn’t seem like the traffic was that bad we needed to do this… But that’s just my two cents .

    • As someone who owns a couple of houses there, yes, it is that bad. The school has basically taken over Lohmeyer, or at least oblivious parents have.
I am happy that the wall will be reassembled and and that there will be a sidewalk added.
