Screen shot 2013-12-01 at 8.56.35 PMThe sister of a Maplewood man who lost his life in Vietnam in 1966, told KSDK Channel 5 the story of how her brother got a headstone 45 years after his death.

Myers’ brother, George Arthur Myers, was shot by a sniper on Thanksgiving Day while serving as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam. He was 18 years old, according to KSDK.

Myers was buried in an unmarked grave because for decades his parents couldn’t afford a headstone.

Forty-five years after his death, a man who had served in Meyers’ unit called his sister, Betty Meyers, to tell her he’d like to help her put a headstone on Myers’ grave.

He wanted soldiers killed in Vietnam to receive the honor they deserved. He helped Betty with the details, so Meyers could finally get a headstone, 45 years after his death.

Betty Myers said the reason Myers didn’t get a headstone was because at the time the Vietnam conflict hadn’t been declared a war.
