New gym in Maplewood: down by the tracks

Mike Walerius, a founder of CrossFit 26 in Brentwood five years ago, has left the Brentwood gym to open Genetic Athletics in Maplewood in a space that was recently storage for a machinist. It’s the last building on the right before the tracks, heading south on Sutton Boulevard.

Walerius said he had a different direction and this opportunity came up so he ran with it.

The space is 2,700 square feet inside and 2,000 square feet covered outside, facing toward the railroad tracks.

He said most of the members now are from his former gym and are used to sweating and working hard, so the lack of AC doesn’t bother them. “If people haven’t done that kind of thing it might be good for them,” he said.

Walerius has started classes he calls Ready Fit, an introduction to CrossFit. “That kind of scares people when they hear that word (CrossFit). It’s ultimately for everyone. I’ve introduced this class of 20-30 minutes of core strength, muscle endurance, and still build some cardiovascular endurance.” Ready Fit meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the morning and evening. He said all classes are free on Friday.
