Coffee drinkers in Maplewood now have another option, which may be particularly good for summertime.

La Cosecha Coffee, on Friday, started pouring its Nitro Genius iced brew. It’s similar to its Flash Brew, introduced in April, but with carbonation.

“It’s creamy and delicious,” Gregory Lowe, a partner in the business said. “It looks like a Guinness, but it’s coffee — adds some chocolateyness, sweetness, a little more carbonation (than Flash Brew).”

He said they use nitrogen to push the Flash Brew iced coffee into the keg. The Nitro Genius is similar, but they add carbonation.

He said they they don’t have the space to have multiple kegs going, so Nitro Genius won’t be on tap all the time.

“When we brew it, we give it time to age and steep, so the carbonation will become more prevalent,” he said. “It varies for each coffee. The first time it took about a week. This time it took two weeks.” He said they prefer to use the darker coffees, like Pacific Rim and Indonesian varieties.

The first batch was on tap Friday, and by Monday afternoon Lowe said he had about one or two pours left. He said they’ll let everyone know via Facebook and Twitter when each batch is ready.
