Police chief: Don’t leave running cars unattended in cold weather

Maplewood Police Chief Steve Kruse cautions drivers not to leave cars warming up with the engine running unattended during cold weather — in a driveway or at a convenience store.

  1. My remote starter automatically locks the doors. Once I’m in it, I have to depress the brake and push the start button. My Escape won’t go anywhere if that isn’t done and the fob isn’t in the car.

  2. Is it legal to turn on the car to defrost if you lock it up? Some remote starts have that feature, or you can use a second key, or like me your car has a keypad entry.
