From court and police reports: Marquita Williams and Deshanae Smith, of St. Louis, worked together to try to steal more than a thousand dollars worth of merchandise from Macy’s at the St. Louis Galleria. Smith, a Macy’s employee at the time, rang up Williams for only a small fraction of what she brought to be checked out.

Williams brought 31 items to a cash register where Smith was working. Smith rang up only one item, for which Williams paid a total of $9.76. Smith bagged it all up and gave it to Williams, who left the store without having paid for any of the other 30 items. Williams was apprehended outside the store and all the merchandise was recovered. Smith and Williams admitted to Macy’s employees that they had acted together to provide the merchandise to Williams without her having to pay for it. The total value of the items taken by Williams, and not paid for, was $1,430.

Williams was charged with a Class C felony and held on $10,000 bond.
