Richmond Heights officers meet residents, share crime prevention tips

Three Richmond Heights police officers assembled in the 7400 block of Bruno Avenue Wednesday to talk with residents as part of the ‘Walk ‘n’ Talk’ program. One said the shared East Central Dispatch Center has made it possible to have more officers on a scene faster—up to 20 officers in 90 seconds if necessary.

There have been no break-ins or car thefts recently, one said, so no neighbors came specifically to talk. Two people walking their dogs got tips on how to prevent crime.

• The department offers a community alert system. Visit www.rhpolice.org and use the “neighborhood alert” tab at the top of the home page to enter an email address or telephone number.
• The department offers a vacation watch service. An officer will check out your home during each shift while you’re gone.
• Cut large bushes that can block the view of your home from the street.
• Use keyed deadbolts on locks (interior), especially on doors with windows.
• Replace latchkey screws with longer screws (2 – 2 3/4 inches) to prevent a door from being kicked in.
• Don’t wait to call police if you see anything out of the ordinary – if you wait 20 minutes it could be too late.
