The wedge corner of Manchester Road and Southwest Avenue — inhabited by a Church’s Chicken for approximately 40 years until it closed in June 2014 — is back in business. Robata opened there Monday night.
Robata is chef Thom Chantharasy’s new location after operating Sekisui, on South Grand. Japanese ramen, sushi and yakitori will be the focus at the new Maplewood restaurant, at 7260 Manchester.
It’s a place for every day, not just special occasions, according to Feast Magazine.
“My idea is if you don’t eat sushi, you can still come in for yakitori,” Chantharasy told Feast. “You can still snack and make a meal of it. Here you can have a bowl of ramen and be full, or you can splurge and buy a bunch of sushi. You could spend $5 per person or $50.”
Robata’s ramen offers a choice of noodles, homemade broths, veggies and toppings. Yakitori is Japanese skewered grilled meat or veggies. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are always available.
The restaurant seats about 35 inside, and a fenced patio is available too.

Chantharasy held a friends and family open house Friday night.
We drove by Robata Friday night and it was packed inside and out.

My wife and I ate there Saturday. Everything was delicious, and we’re looking forward to becoming regulars. I can’t recommend it enough.
