Press Release—Greater St. Louis Area Council | BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA—Scouting for Food began in St. Louis in 1985 as a council-wide service project. Starting in 1988, it became a national Scouting America program. Today, many councils across the country participate, collectively gathering hundreds of thousands of pounds of shelf-stable goods for food-disadvantaged residents of their local communities.
Scouting for Food takes place on two consecutive weekends. On the first weekend, Scouts distribute bags and/or door hangers to let their neighbors know about the drive. On the second, Scouts revisit those houses to pick up bags full of canned food, cereal, pasta, peanut butter, juice and other nonperishable items.
That’s the genesis of Scouting for Food, the annual food-collection drive run by local councils. It’s another reminder to our local communities that Scouts are here, doing good turns.
Collecting Food to Help Others in Need
Our Goal: 70 Million Items of Food
Since Scouting for Food began in 1985, Scouts have collected more than 68 million items to feed families in need. This year, our goal is to surpass 70 million items across the council. To reach this milestone, we’ve established district-level goals. Last year, Pathfinder District collected 76,946 items, which was 5% of the council’s total. To help meet our 2025 goal, our district’s target is 101,599 items. Please donate if you are able. That’s an ambitious increase, but it represents an incredible opportunity to help many more families facing food insecurity across our communities.

Thank you to everyone who donated! If you are commenting here that your bag was missed, I am sorry that your generous donations went uncollected. If you are still willing to have your donations collected, please reach out to this email: pack3362@gmail.com. We would happy to assist in making sure your donation is picked up.
put out 4 cases of canned vegetables and 9 grocery bags of other food on Saturday in south St Louis it wasn’t picked up called and was promised pickup.no pickup. Called on Sunday left voice mail. We have donated to the food drive for as long as it’s been going on spent $100 hard earned dollars to help but maybe no more. As an elderly person I can’t use that much food in family size containers and have no transportation to donate it elsewhere.
I brought these comments about food not being picked up to the executive director of the Boy Scouts Greater St. Louis Area Council. She thanked me and said it’s something that needs to be resolved.
