PetSmart at Brentwood Promenade was evacuated at about 11 a.m. Thursday for what Brentwood Assistant Fire Chief Terry Kurten called a “vapor leak,” according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Following an undetermined hazardous material leak at the pet store, seven who complained of nausea and dizziness on the scene were taken to hospitals for evaluation. About 20 dogs and cats were evacuated to an air-conditioned city bus outside.

Dr. Tom Schwartz, of the Banfield Veterinary Clinic in the store, told the Post-Dispatch some people began feeling ill after the air-conditioning failed Thursday morning.

The leak appeared to have come from the veterinary clinic side of the business, he said. It remained unclear what the substance was.

Schwartz remarked on an “incredible response” from firefighters, the Post-Dispatch reported.
