The South County Connector, a proposed highway project from Hanley Road north of Deer Creek Center to River Des Peres Boulevard, near Shrewsbury, is currently with the St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic.

A draft version of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) went through a public comment period earlier this year. The department is responding to every comment possible.

Jon Hicks, transportation development analyst for St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic, said it’s taking longer than anticipated, due to the high volume of comments.

“Some (comments) are impossible to address, especially some that just say, ‘we object to the project,” he said. “But we are making note of each of those objections and each of those that are for the project.”

He said they hope to complete the process in November or December, then a revised EIS will be sent to the Federal Highway Administration. At that time the document will also be available to the public online, on CDs and in libraries. He said it will be close to a thousand pages long.

The Federal Highway Administration should announce its decision on the project in early 2014.

  1. This will bring pollution & noise………were studies done on this? We already have Hwy 44 polluting & making noise all day. Maplewood does not need to be in the middle of these two highways. This is a dis-connect, not a connector.
