Ward 1 aldermanic candidate David Plufka said some of his signs were stolen Tuesday night, but he’s not pressing charges. A Brentwood resident called 40 South News Wednesday afternoon with information about the suspected theft.

The resident gave 40 South News the police report number. 40 South News submitted a Sunshine Request for the report and was told it would take 5-7 working days.

Chief of Police Dan Fitzgerald called 40 South News later Wednesday to talk about the incident.

He said he had talked with Plufka about it Wednesday morning.

“He came in this morning to tell me about some signs that were taken. We dealt with this last night,” Fitzgerald said. “It was kids.”

Fitzgerald said the suspects are 18 years old. So they’re not juveniles.

“We ended up finding out who they were. We talked to them. They were very apologetic. They returned the signs, apologized to David and we’re just going to let sleeping dogs lie,” Fitzgerald said. He said Plufka felt bad for the kids and their families.

He said Plufka is adamant about not wanting to have their information out in public, and is not pressing charges. Fitzgerald said they’re high school kids.

“After talking to David this morning, we decided to just type up a little bit of an information report, just in case this would happen again.”

Fitzgerald said the report might be ready by Monday.

  1. John – still waiting to hear from you. I am not backing down from your inappropriate comments in regards to my wife Maureen. Look forward to hearing from you to conclude what you have put out into the public’s eye

  2. John – I know you well and am calling you out on mentioning my wife’s name in any part of this. Yes, she is supporting candidates a democratic right. She has absolutely no part in any of this.
Shame on you for such a poorly placed comment.

  3. If in fact that is the case, if they are associated with a campaign, that would change my mind completely.

    • Brandon, the man involved is the step son of Tom Shipley, who some call Hart Nelson’s campaign manager. True or not Nelson and Shipley are very close in this election. In addition, Nelson is closely associated with Wilson who is closely associated with Saunders. Check out the yard signs. Coincidence, innocence, I think if you buy that, then I have a bridge to sell you and will do so at a discounted price.

      • Guilt by association impacts many a good person especially in small town America.

Many more of us actually respect Mr. Geppert for his past contributions and are grateful for his civic service.

His years of service and the quality the n/e commercial corridor will provide operational funds for Brentwood and her schools while keeping resident’s taxes low well into the future.

Mr. Geppert called Brentwood his home for 60 years and if he wants to participate in Brentwood’s civic affairs he has earned that right.

It will be much easier to ride off into the sunset as the reins are handed off to the next generation of respectful, considerate and fair-minded individuals.

  4. Lets cancel their Tif, tax abatement, golf tourney, casino credit card, unearned overtime and retirement party.

  5. David Plufka should be commended for taking the higher ground and not pressing any charges against teenagers or wanting thier names released. This is a small community and it will be known who was behind this, without posting any names, I have to disagree with Cheryl as stealing signs is stealing and that is criminal and they have to know they could go to jail. It may of been stupid but 18 year olds of voting age for this election had to know what they were doing and the consequences of thier actions. I was hoping these kind of actions would not be part of this election cycle.

  6. I agree with you Brandon. Most parents would contest, that their kids have not always made wise choices! I guarantee, they did not think they were doing anything criminal, at the time they were doing it. Let’s face it, kids do stupid things at that age, without thinking about the consequences. I would bet they have already learned a valuable lesson!

  7. Two things. 1) How 40 south got the report number is irrelevant and shouldn’t have even been asked. 2) If Mr. Plufka doesn’t want the kids name out there, please do the right thing and don’t publish it.
